The Big Island of Hawaii is home to some of the world's most unique beaches—shorelines made entirely of jet-black sand formed from volcanic lava meeting the sea. These stunning natural wonders are must-visit destinations during your stay at Island Goodes.
How Black Sand Beaches Form
When hot lava flows into the ocean, it shatters upon contact with the cool water, creating tiny fragments of volcanic glass and basalt. Over time, wave action breaks these fragments down into fine black sand. The Big Island's active volcanic history means we have more black sand beaches than anywhere else in Hawaii.
Punalu'u Black Sand Beach
Located about 60 miles south of Island Goodes, Punalu'u is the most famous black sand beach on the Big Island. This stunning beach is known for:
- Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles: Honu (sea turtles) frequently rest on the warm black sand
- Dramatic Scenery: Coconut palms line the shore against jet-black sand
- Easy Access: Paved parking, restrooms, and picnic facilities available
- Swimming: Generally safe for wading, though currents can be strong
Important: Please maintain at least 10 feet distance from sea turtles—it's both respectful and required by law.
Kehena Beach
This secluded black sand beach in lower Puna (about 30 minutes from Island Goodes) offers a more adventurous experience. Known locally as a clothing-optional beach, Kehena features:
- Dramatic cliff setting with palm trees
- Regular dolphin sightings offshore
- Strong waves—best for experienced swimmers only
- Sunday drum circles and local community gatherings
Access requires descending a steep trail, so wear appropriate footwear.
Pololu Valley Beach
On the northern tip of the island, Pololu Valley rewards hikers with a remote black sand beach at the bottom of a scenic valley. The 15-minute hike down offers spectacular views, and the beach is often deserted on weekdays.
Tips for Visiting Black Sand Beaches
- Footwear: Black sand absorbs heat—it can be very hot in direct sun
- Photography: The contrast of black sand against blue water is stunning
- Respect: Never take sand home—it's culturally disrespectful and illegal
- Safety: Always check conditions before swimming; some beaches have strong currents
- Timing: Early morning or late afternoon offers cooler sand and better light
